In Northland, we offer the following services:

• Information and support; both for people living with epilepsy and their families or whanau.
• Face to face visits throughout Northland and ongoing phone support from our local Educator 
• Personal appointments to assist a person and their family to understand and manage their epilepsy. This includes lifestyle management and strategies to help gain seizure control and build confidence.
• Facilitation of peer support throughout Northland to enable people to meet others living with epilepsy.  The Whangarei support group meets the first Tuesday of the month in the Brenda Gardner Lounge, Citizens Advice Bureau,  71 Bank Street, Whangarei
• Representation for people living with epilepsy to health services, schools, employers and community agencies.
• Agents for the nation-wide Total Mobility Scheme which entitles people to subsidised taxi fares within the Whangarei city boundary.
• Seminars on epilepsy are available for health and education  professionals, students, community agencies, clubs, workplaces, care facilities and government departments etc.
• Community awareness is promoted through participation at community and health based expos throughout Northland.

Margaret Dunn - Educator

I joined the team at Epilepsy New Zealand in July 2011 as a Field Officer based in Whangarei covering the Northland District Health Board area from Te Hana to the south of Whangarei up as far as Cape Reinga in the North and Coast to Coast.

My role is to provide support to people living with epilepsy and their families and whanau, to raise public awareness of this condition and provide education in the community about epilepsy.  Increased knowledge about epilepsy in the community helps to reduce stigma and misunderstanding and encourages everyone to see the person and not the epilepsy, especially in the areas of employment and recreation.

I come from a varied background working largely in the education sector and in client focused roles.  I also have experience as an Electroencephalograph (EEG) Technician where I worked closely with Neurologists who specialise in this condition.

My goal is to support anyone living with epilepsy to gain or at least improve seizure control, to build confidence and live life to the full.

I am available for information about epilepsy, personal appointments, representation and presentation of seminars both in Whangarei and throughout Northland.
