The Impact of Physical Impairment Survey

Over the next 7 weeks Laura Wilkinson-Meyers is looking far and wide across the whole of New Zealand for people with a physical impairment who are willing to share information about what it really takes (…and costs!!!) to live an ordinary life in New Zealand.

She is looking for contributions from people with a physical impairment, ages 18 to 64,  to develop a web site about what it really takes (and costs) to live an ordinary life in the community.

This new information resource is being set up for disabled people, disability organisations, and other stakeholders to provide information about the additional equipment, support, transport and time people with a physical impairment need to live an ordinary life.

Even more important, when this site is finished, it will present the cost of buying these items and meeting these needs and how these expenditures impact on people’s pocketbooks, their quality of life and and their ability to achieve an adequate standard of living.

If you would like to take part in this survey please visit www.impactofimpairment.com

This project is the final piece of Laura Wilkinson-Meyers PhD at the University of Auckland. With the support of her advisor Philip Patston and ‘you’ this research will provide disabled people, their families and advocacy groups with valuable information that can be used to better inform planning and funding decisions to improve the every day lives of disabled New Zealanders.

Laura (above)is still requiring participants to provide feedback for the survey she is undertaking. It doesn’t take long and it’s not rocket science so if you have a disability and a few spare minutes this is a good opportunity to provide your feedback and hopefully,it may result in some positive outcomes benefitting those experiencing a disabling environment - the one most of us live in!

Minnie’s presentation on Be Accessibe was truly inspiring. disappointing to see those most in need of ‘enlightenment’ were absent….a great build up for the RWC and way beyond so up to those who did attend to be vocal! and spread the Be word!
