World Alzheimers Day

Published 17 September 2008, Posted in Northland World Alzheimers Day

Sunday 21st September is World Alzheimers Day – and Alzheimers Northland will be marking the occasion with a service of Thanksgiving at Christ Church (in the Regent) at 9.30, followed by morning tea.

All are welcome to attend.

World Alzheimers Day is celebrated annually and marks the opportunity to consider all those affected by Alzheimers, and/or dementia. This includes the people with the disease, their families, their caregivers, organizations who provide support and the medical and research communities working to find solutions for preventing and eventually curing dementia.

Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) is marking World Alzheimer’s Day by releasing the Global Alzheimer’s Disease Charter adopted by its 77 member organizations, of which New Zealand is one.

The Charter calls for the following six principles:

  • Promote awareness and understanding of the disease.
  • Respect the human rights of people with the disease.
  • Recognise the key role of families and carers
  • Provide access to health and social care
  • Stress the importance of optimal treatment after diagnosis
  • Take action to prevent the disease, through improvements in public health.

Minnie’s presentation on Be Accessibe was truly inspiring. disappointing to see those most in need of ‘enlightenment’ were absent….a great build up for the RWC and way beyond so up to those who did attend to be vocal! and spread the Be word!
