WINZ red tape wrangle

Published 13 March 2007, Posted in National / 1 Comment

Tiaho Trust has received numerous complaints from people who have life long disabilities, who anually have to get a medical certificates and complete a form from Work & Income stating that they still have a disability/s . To quote one individual, “I can handle being disabled all my life, but it is a real poke in the eye having to go to a doctor every year so they can tell me ““Gee, you know what, your still disabled”“.

Georgie Simmons of Auckland wrote to ‘Fair Go’ sick of the number of times her son, Derek, who has Down Syndrome, needed a medical to confirm he had the condition. The medicals were a requirement by Work and Income for people applying for new, or continued, benefits.

The Fair Go Website has an article about this story and a video of this episode you can view.

Hi

My name is Simone, I’m a single mother with three children, my youngest being diagnosed with Down Syndrome.

I can totally relate to the woman regarding the annual medical certificate.  My son’s “condition” isn’t ever going to change so why do we have to make the unnecessary trip to the doctor’s!  It’s stupid and ridiculous.

I’d like to see a change in this area where time, money and effort isn’t being wasted, not just on my part but also for the tax payer’s.

Sincerely,

Simone

Minnie’s presentation on Be Accessibe was truly inspiring. disappointing to see those most in need of ‘enlightenment’ were absent….a great build up for the RWC and way beyond so up to those who did attend to be vocal! and spread the Be word!
