MORE HOUSING FOR THE DISABLED COMMUNITY
The formation of the Whangarei Accessible Housing Trust in October, 2006 has realised a greater need for housing for the disabled community in the Whangarei district. The Trust’s aim is to facilitate housing solutions for disabled people and their families/whanau who have been unable to find suitable and affordable accessible housing.
In December, 2006, the Trust completed a development report and applied for funding from Housing New Zealand Corporation’s Housing Innovation Fund. As a result, Housing New Zealand Corporation responded by offering them finance for the sole purpose of purchasing and modifying existing houses in the Whangarei area.
Trustee, Susanne Scanlen says ‘The announcement by HNZC is a real thrill after a year of intensive work with the community to identify and define the needs amongst the disability community in Whangarei.’
The announcement coincided with the appointment of Barry Moore as the Trust’s Housing Co-Ordinator. Barry has extensive experience in community housing and the Trust and the disability community look forward to gaining from his contacts, knowledge and commitment to create solutions to social housing issues.
With the announcement of funding and the appointment of Barry Moore, the Whangarei Accessible Housing Trust aims to move as quickly as possible to purchase eight houses during the year.
‘The Trust is now in very good heart and are looking forward to celebrating the purchase of the first property’ reports Trust Chair, Susanne Scanlen.
Barry Moore has been appointed Housing Co-Ordinator and is now working with disabled people and families to find suitable housing, looking at their current housing situation, what people can afford and what housing options are available for them.
If you would like to know more about what the trust does and Barry’s role please give Barry a call at 09 437 1899 ext 709.

Hi there,
I would like to commend those of you who were involved in setting up the Accessible Housing Trust. I am the co-ordinator of a health & disability support & resource group in Thames/Coromandel/Hauraki area. We are in the process of becoming our own identity as a Disability Resource Centre Trust and are about to hold our 1st stakeholders meeting on the 12th March. One of the huge issues in our area is accessible housing. I know of many people with disabilities who have had to move away to the cities to enable them to live in an accessible house. I would love to know more about your history and how you have achieved what you have thus far.
Regards,
Robyn Pengelly

Minnie’s presentation on Be Accessibe was truly inspiring. disappointing to see those most in need of ‘enlightenment’ were absent….a great build up for the RWC and way beyond so up to those who did attend to be vocal! and spread the Be word!
