Loren’s latest

Published 19 January 2009, Posted in National Loren’s latest

Hello Everyone

I trust that you all had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

In this issue of Loren’s Latest I would like to talk about how great it is that Athletes in the Paralympics are getting the same recognition as our Olympic athletes.

Many of you may already know this but for those who did not, all medallists in the Paralympics were made Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the New Year’s Honours.

As a follow on from this 15 year old swimmer Sophie Pascoe, is among the four finalists for the 2008 Helberg Trust Sportswoman of the year. Many in the sporting world know that the Helbergs are thé sporting awards!

Pascoe is up against Olympians Valerie Vili and Samantha Warriner, as well as double gold medallist in the World Bowls Championship, Val Smith.

Whether Pascoe wins the title or not, it impressed me to see that the people who decide the nominees are not excluding her because she has a disability. Lets hope that this is a sign of things to come were people with disabilities are competing against non-disabled for top honours.

In addition to this story, athletes such as swimmer Cameron Leslie and cyclist Paula Tesoriero were nominated for sportsman and sportswoman respectively however did not make the finalists.

All the best to Sophie for this award!!

Look forward to talking to you again soon.

Loren Corbett

Minnie’s presentation on Be Accessibe was truly inspiring. disappointing to see those most in need of ‘enlightenment’ were absent….a great build up for the RWC and way beyond so up to those who did attend to be vocal! and spread the Be word!
