A trek still too far…

Published 02 August 2007, Posted in Northland

When a disability car park was placed 60 metres away from the main entrance of the new Whangarei Aquatic Centre, the Disability Sector Reference Group to the Whangarei District Council sprung into action.

View the video below this article which was taped in early November 2006.

Not a lot has changed since this interview with Vanassa McGoldrick, Chairperson of the Disability Sector Reference Group was filmed.  The DSRG has been working hard alongside Council and Sport Northland to bring about changes that will enable disabled people to enjoy the new facilities at the Aquatic Centre.

Disabled people can help bring about the changes needed by adding their comments to the article on our home page ‘Six month wait drives disabled people to the media’.  These comments will be passed on to the Disability Sector Reference Group to help them lobby Council and Sport Northland to bring about these changes sooner rather than later.

Minnie’s presentation on Be Accessibe was truly inspiring. disappointing to see those most in need of ‘enlightenment’ were absent….a great build up for the RWC and way beyond so up to those who did attend to be vocal! and spread the Be word!
