Respite care for over 17 year olds

Many families of a child with a disability will be accessing out of home respite. You may be aware this respite is divided into “under 17yr old” or “over 17yr old” categories.
We have heard anecdotally from families that accessing quality and relatively local out of home respite for over 17yr olds can be difficult.

An accessible RWC in Whangarei
Published September 13th 2011, Posted in NorthlandTiaho Trust has been working closely with the Whangarei District Council and Enterprise Northland to help make RWC 2011 in Northland an event that everybody can access and enjoy.
To enable easy access to the two games in Whangarei for people with a disability, two Tiaho Trust accessible vans with wheelchair hoists will provide a shuttle service from the designated drop-off area on the new Porownini Avenue extension delivering them directly to the game. Many thanks to RWC volunteers Michael MacDonald and Scott McDonald who are helping to provide this service.

Healthy Hikurangi Health Expo
Published September 13th 2011, Posted in NorthlandThe Healthy Hikurangi project is running a Health Expo on Saturday the 8th October from 9am -12noon in the Hikurangi War Memorial Hall.
It is an opportunity for the community to link in with the many health and social service organisations that work within the Hikurangi community.
There will be educational stalls as well as nurses available for child immunisations.

Plan ahead to get to the games

The Northland 2011 group is reminding fans to plan ahead and allow plenty of time to get to the first Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC 2011) game this week.
The Northland Events Centre plays host to its first Pool A match on Wednesday 14 September, Tonga v Canada.

Get ‘Sports Ears’ for the RWC

As a fan, there’s nothing better than being at the rugby and seeing it live! Now, with the help of Sports Ears, you can also HEAR it live including choosing between what the referee, assistant referee and TV commentators say.

Sib Support NZ Workshop

The SibShop is for children aged between 8 – 18 who do not have a health condition, disability or special/additional needs, but have a brother or sister that does.

Getting ‘Hooked up to health’
Published September 02nd 2011, Posted in NorthlandTiaho Trust, Epilepsy Northland, NorthAble Disability Services and Parent to Parent recently attended the ‘Hook up to Health Hui’ in Ruakaka. An event focused on hooking families/whanau up to health services in their community which are often provided at no cost.
The sun was out and the fish may have been biting out at the point, but at the Bream Bay Community Trust, people were ‘hooking into’ a free helping of healthy sausages cooked by the Marsden Lions and Centrah One Home maintenance services. Homemade chicken soup was also provided by the Bream Bay Community Trust and Regent Training Centre Food cooking class, you couldn’t get enough of this!

‘Whangarei Brain Day’ now out on DVD
Published September 01st 2011, Posted in NorthlandThe ‘Whangarei Brain Day’ was held in March this year in collaboration with the Neurological Foundation of New Zealand. It was part of an international effort to communicate the wonder and achievements of brain research and included lectures by leading neuroscientists and clinical neurology experts.
Community organisations that support people with a brain related disorder were also present and talked about the many valuable services they provide in the community and how people can access their services.

Copthorne Mobilises New Offerings

Guests at the Copthorne will have access to greater mobility around Waitangi and Paihia, thanks to a new partnership between Dove’s Tail and the Copthorne Hotel and Resort Bay of Islands, with financial support from Top Energy.
There is a new mobility scooter available for hire at the Waitangi Copthorne, which will provide a far greater holiday experience for tourists visiting the Bay of Islands with a mobility impairment.

Minnie’s presentation on Be Accessibe was truly inspiring. disappointing to see those most in need of ‘enlightenment’ were absent….a great build up for the RWC and way beyond so up to those who did attend to be vocal! and spread the Be word!
