MS Golf Tournament

Northland MS are having a fundraising golf tournament for all levels of talent (or not) men and ladies on Sunday 8th November at the Whangarei (Denby) Golf Club, Tikipunga.
Get a team of four together to play a nine hole ambrose, non-golfers are invited to come and have some fun as well.

ASB Community Trust Meetings

ASB Community Trust is holding public meetings in Auckland and Northland to present its 2009 financial year results and discuss plans for the future.
The Auckland meeting is at Orakei Marae, on Kitemoana St, Orakei, on Monday 3 August.
The Northland meeting is in Kerikeri’s The Centre on Saturday, September 5.

One in four adults have musculoskeletal disorders

A recently released study, called “The Crippling Burden”, has given disturbing statistics on the impact of musculoskeletal disorders. The cost to New Zealand is now more than $5,570 million a year.
This is the first update since ‘The Economic Cost of Arthritis’ report was released in 2006, and the costs are only escalating.
There are over 850,000 New Zealanders who need to have their disorders given higher recognition by healthcare leaders. As it currently stands, arthritis isn’t one of the 13 health priorities.

Oral history to be recorded in NZSL

Oral history in New Zealand will break new ground following this year’s allocation of awards for recording memories and life stories. For the first time a video oral history project will be recorded in New Zealand Sign Language, the country’s third official language, with money given to members of the Deaf community.
Northland Parents of Deaf Children has received $12,000 from the Australian Sesquicentennial Gift Trust Awards in Oral History to interview parents and their Deaf adult children. It is planned that interviews will be a pilot for a larger project.

Getting older with Cerebral Palsy

The University of Auckland and Auckland University of Technology (AUT) are just starting a study looking into people’s experiences of ageing with cerebral palsy.
Their study aims to find out more about how getting older affects people with cerebral palsy. We will be talking with people with CP aged over 35 years living in Auckland and the upper North Island about strategies they use to age positively and stay well.

The Human Rights Commission is reviewing the progress towards making all public land transport services accessible to disabled people.
It is now three years since the Commission published the Accessible Journey report. As part of the process the Commission wants to hear about disabled people’s experience of using public land transport services.

LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games is making history this August as the first elite snow sports event to have able bodied and athletes with a disability compete together.
100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games will provide the opportunity for both able bodied and athletes with a disability to race alongside each other in the alpine skiing and cross-country skiing disciplines. However, with valuable points available for Olympic and Paralympic qualification, the scoring system will be separate under FIS (Federation International de Ski) and IPC (International Paralympic Committee) regulations.

The man who is believed to be New Zealand’s only Maori deaf boxing fighter is stepping into the competition ring for the first time.
At 43-years-old, Whangarei’s Mita Moses has been told he’s too old to box, but that doesn’t bother him at all.
``I’ve been training for the past two years and eight months,’’ he says. ``And I love it. I’m hungry to get into the ring.’’
