IHC Telecom Art Awards

IHC launches 2008 IHC Telecom Art Awards

IHC is calling for entries in the IHC Telecom Art Awards 2008 – the major showcase of the talents of artists with intellectual disabilities.

The Art Awards are open to all New Zealanders with an intellectual disability, whether or not they use IHC services.

Knocking out Concussion

This week is Brain Injury awareness week. 

Every week, over 450 New Zealanders sustain a concussion according to the World Health Organisation, with many more going unreported and undiagnosed. ‘Knocking Out Concussion’ is this year’s theme for the Brain Injury Awareness Week which runs from 3 -10 June and aims to increase awareness of the long-term and unseen effects of concussions.

Schools Plus in the Disability Sector

The Auckland Disability Providers Network was invited to make comment on the Schools Plus programme that has been introduced by the Government.  Unfortunately, it was too late to arrange a meeting before the deadline of 31st May 2008, but the Ministry of Education is still keen to hear from the disability sector.

Arthritis NZ Northland is hosting a workshop on Gout on Saturday 21st June at the St Johns Ambulance Hall in Kaikohe from 10 am to 12 noon. 

If you want to learn all about Gout come along to hear speakers Dr Perer Gow (Gout Specialist), Victoria Harris (Maori Arthritis Educator) and Ashton Tairua (living with Gout).  To register, please phone the Far North Service Centre on 0800 663 463 or Carol on 09 408 2451.  Entry cost is a koha.  Arthritis NZ members free.

Chinas guide to insensitivity

About 4,000 Disabled people will be competing in 20 sports at the Paralympics games in China from the 7th to the 17th of September.

After reading a recent article in the NZ Herald on Tuesday 27th May titled ‘China’s guide wins gold for insensitivity’; it is evident that disabled people will not only be completing for medals in their chosen sport but also for the right to be treated as equals.

Autism New Zealand Parent Meeting

Motherhood and women experiencing disability

Women with impairment experience disability in many aspects of life. A stigma still exists towards them becoming mothers with these women sometimes being regarded as asexual and not capable of being mothers. Such attitudes may influence the quality and appropriateness of care and support provided by health professionals.

To date little research has been carried out, and none in New Zealand, to indicate or respond to the facilitators and barriers to pregnancy, birth and motherhood for women with impairments.
