The Living Well Project

Kia ora, talofa lava and hello, you are invited to take part in a study aiming to explore ways disabled people stay (or become) healthy. We are particularly interested in finding the best ways for disabled people to take part in physical activity and healthy eating. 

We want to talk with disabled people and other key stakeholders (such as family/whanau of disabled people or people who work with disabled people) about what they see as the barriers and facilitators to engaging in health behaviours. We also want to find out how you think some of the existing strategies could be modified to make them more responsive to the needs of disabled people.Living well for people with a disability or with a disabling health condition.

Programme for ‘Have a Go’ Day

The United Nations International Day of the Older Person (IDOP) is held on 1 October each year to celebrate older people worldwide.

The theme of the tenth anniversary IDOP is “have a go”. A bounty of activities has been organised for senior citizens at the Town Basin and at Kiwi North (the former Whangarei Museum and Heritage Park) in Maunu, with a free bus running between the two locations.

The aim of the day is to invite senior members of the community along to some enjoyable events and to let people know about a wide range of activities offered by a number of organisations in our community each and every day of the week.

So come along and ‘Have a Go!’.

Know your rights seminars

Free seminars are being offered in Whangarei and Kaikohe for Deaf and Hearing Impaired people to learn about thier rights when recieving a Health or Disability Service.

Come and meet Deaf Advocate Anna Dubbelt to learn about the Code or Rights.  There will be a NZSL Interpreter available and tea and biscuits will be provided.

Northland Deaf shout out ‘One Year to Go’

From cows in Clutha to sky writers in Taranaki, regions all over New Zealand have marked the milestone of ‘One Year to Go’ (OYTG) until RWC 2011 in their own unique regional style.

Regions were invited to ‘shout out’ or ‘spell out’ OYTG, and film it for inclusion in a national compilation released on September 9, 2010 to mark the milestone.

Some used well known landmarks, others had a Rugby or festival theme and one group even did it in sign language…but they all did it in their own way.

International Day of the Older Person

The United Nations’ International Day of the Older Person (IDOP) is celebrated on 1 October each year. This year’s international celebration marks the tenth anniversary of IDOP.

Whangarei will celebrate IDOP with a number of activities under the banner “have a go” on this day from 10am - 2pm at the Town Basin and Heritage Park, Maunu.

All around New Zealand there’s a special breed of Kiwi, going the extra mile, overcoming obstacles and achieving results – not for themselves, but for their communities.

We call them Kiwi Battlers, and we want to reward New Zealand’s best – the Kiwis working the hardest and having the most positive impact on the lives of the people around them.

We have two regional finalists, Kathryn Sadgrove from the Northland Down Syndrome Support Group and Vanessa Gray from the Brain Injury Association.  Place your vote now to decide the winning battler for our region.
