The ‘Northland Brain Train’

Northland Brain Train logoThe Neurological Foundation and Tiaho Trust are proud to host the Inaugural ‘Northland Brain Train’. This is a ‘free’ event and there is no need to register, just come along and learn how to train your brain!

Discover the wonders of the human brain and learn about the latest neuroscience research into brain health and brain disorders.

Come along and listen to lectures by leading neuroscientists and displays and seminars by community support groups including Alzheimers Northland, Brain Injury Association Northland, Parent 2 Parent, Epilepsy Northland and the Neurological Foundation.

Hydrotherapy Pool feedback sought

Feedback is being sought from the public about the Hydrotherapy Public Pool Sessions and their demandat at the Aquatic Centre in Whangarei. 

Please complete both sides of this questionnaire attached to this article and return to the Whangarei Aquatics Centre customer comments box. 

Results from this survey are essential to assist in the programming of pool space and future usage of this pool.  Other comments/suggestions would you like to make about Hydrotherapy Public Sessions so that we can continue to improve accessibility are also welcome.

Disabled sailing returns to Whangarei

Sailability Auckland logoSailability Auckland and the Whangarei/Parua Bay Cruising Club are planning an event for all people with disabilities from 22 to 26 February at the Whangarei Cruising Club.

The event follows on from a successful three day event held in 2008 for Northland school students with disabilities.  This year’s event will be available to all people with disabilities and three boats and instructors will be available. 

The event will culminate in a big ‘Have a Go – Sailing’ event on Saturday 27 February.

Project Coordinator Convention Coalition

The newly formed Convention Coalition of Disabled Persons organisations is seeking a Project Coordinator to facilitate a mechanism for disabled people’s input to the monitoring of disability rights as spelled out in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). 

This will enable the production of a shadow monitoring report from New Zealand disabled peoples’ organisations and will be achieved through the adaptation of the DRPI framework for the implementation in NZ, facilitation and implementation of the adapted framework, ensuring the process is sustainable into the future.

Local Businesses support Deaf Children

Volunteer Alana Best wrapping a Christmas gift at Classics BookstoreIn the lead up to Christmas 2009, Northland Parents of Deaf Children Inc were given the opportunity to raise funds for their group through the generosity of Classics Boookstore.

They sent their customers to volunteers from the group who were wrapping Christmas presents outside the shop in the Civic Arcade and in addition, Classics provided all the paper and ribbons for the wrapping. Fast Signz donated a sign.
