Boccia National results outstanding

The 2009 National Boccia Tournament was held over Labour Weekend in Whangarei. Twenty six competitors from all over New Zealand and Australia assembled at Kensington Stadium. The tournament was officially opened by Whangarei MP Phil Heatley who then competed against Scott Burdett in an exhibition match.

New ASD Parent Education Programme

This programme is being run by IDEA Specialist Services to provide education to the families and whanau of pre-school children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Changes to Ministry of Health and Education contracting mean that this replaces Autism NZs Early Bird programme in the Northland region.
ASD Plus assists families and whanau to learn more about Autism Spectrum Disorder and the support strategies that will benefit the young person who has ASD as well as the rest of the family or whanau.

R D A Ribbon Day

On the 27th September the Riding for Disabled Association (R. D. A) held its ribbon day and despite some very heavy rain we had twenty two riders and six horses and ponies take part.
Three of the events were of special Olympic standard. This meant that riders could qualify and register for future special Olympic events. Kay from Special Olympics presented ribbons to 6th place.

Free Epilepsy Seminars

Epilepsy Northland invites you to attend one of our free seminars taking place every third Friday of the month for the next three months in Whangarei.
This course empowers you with the knowledge that you are doing the right thing if someone has a seizure in your care. It will help you recognize and understand all types of seizures. The course is suitable for people with epilepsy, their whanau, teachers, carers, nurses, doctors, bus & taxi drivers and the general public. (Certificate of attendance given)
If you have any new staff members who would benefit from the training please book them in now and we will get them up to speed. I have arranged these over the lunch hour to give maximum flexibility.

Its a small world, once a year, for little people

Check out this article which was published in the Sunday Star Times a couple of weeks ago.
It talks about the Little Peoples’ Conference which I attended. It was a totally awesome weekend of catching up with old friends, making new ones, mixed in with a lot of laughter!!
I hope you enjoy reading the article, as I believe that it truly sums up the weekend and what it is like being a little person in a big peoples world.

New Zealand Boocia Nationals

Press release - For immediate release
The New Zealand Boccia 13th National Championships is to be held in Whangarei.
Northland Boccia is hosting players from Australia and teams from all over New Zealand for this year’s National Championships.
Spectators will be welcome and play will commence after an Opening Ceremony on Friday 23rd at 9am at the Kensington Stadium in Whangarei with competition carrying on through to Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 9am to 5pm.

Local Government Act Review

A review of Local Government has been signalled earlier this year by Minister Rodney Hide. He has said it’s because of his concerns about transparency, accountability and fiscal management within local government.
For a while it was on the back burner while the Auckland issues were a priority. Now it has become more active, and we are hearing disturbing things about what this rearrangement would mean, and there are real concerns for disabled people.

Sex, Intimacy and Spinal Cord Injury workshop

TASC and the Auckland Spinal Rehabilitation Unit invite you to an informative evening to discuss topics surrounding sex, intimacy and spinal cord injury.
Two workshops are being run, one for spinal cord injury clients and their partners and the other is aimed at caregivers, nurses, counsellors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, case managers and others.
