NZ Winter Games Make History

100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games a World First for Disabled Athletes

LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games is making history this August as the first elite snow sports event to have able bodied and athletes with a disability compete together.

100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games will provide the opportunity for both able bodied and athletes with a disability to race alongside each other in the alpine skiing and cross-country skiing disciplines. However, with valuable points available for Olympic and Paralympic qualification, the scoring system will be separate under FIS (Federation International de Ski) and IPC (International Paralympic Committee) regulations.

Mita hungry to get into ring

The man who is believed to be New Zealand’s only Maori deaf boxing fighter is stepping into the competition ring for the first time.

At 43-years-old, Whangarei’s Mita Moses has been told he’s too old to box, but that doesn’t bother him at all.

``I’ve been training for the past two years and eight months,’’ he says. ``And I love it. I’m hungry to get into the ring.’’

NDHB’s Disability Strategy Implementation Plan

The Northland District Health Board  is currently developing a Disability Strategy Implementation Plan and  through Tiaho Trust is seeking  input and  feedback from disabled people, their families  and whanau.

We want access to services, not compassion

DPA NZ logoThe Health and Disability Commissioner is currently reviewing the Health and Disability Commissioner Act 1994 (the Act) and the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights (the Code).

DPA NZ has sent a letter to the Health and Disability Commssion about the possible inclusion of the right to ‘Compassion’ being added to the existing rights under the code as suggested by the Compassion in Healthcare Trust.

Your thoughts are welcome on this subject and will be forward to DPA NZ, the National Assembly of People with Disabilities.

Now in her final year of the Bachelor of Applied Science, Best travelled to Fiji to explore the marine environment firsthand.

Calling all young performers: Kapa Haka, Hip Hop, Dance, Drama, Comedy … to be part of our Youth Fest Performance.

As part of the Whangarei Mid Winter Arts Festival a stage with sound system will be set-up near the waterfall at The Quarry Arts Centre to celebrate the young talent in our community.

Parkinson’s NZ has launched a film!

Parkinson's LogoThe film is aimed at people who know nothing about Parkinson’s, and may wonder what it is, and why supporting Parkinson’s New Zealand is important. It explores the different affects that Parkinson’s can have on people - ranging from depression, to the clarification and relief a diagnosis can bring.

While we hope this film will be of use to our members, it is targeted towards the under 40 audience who are active on the internet and may not previously have known about our organisation, or our cause.

Disability Friendly Northland

I recently presented a submission to the Northland Regional Council (transcript at end of article) as part of the current long term planning process.

Previous to this I also presented submissions to the Far North District Council for their LTCCP. I feel it is imperative that both of these ratepayer funded organizations work together to raise the standard of service to people with disabilities in our region and district.

Hand and Wrist Seminar

Arthritis NZ logoArthritis New Zealand is having a seminar on Hands & Wrists, Wednesday June 10 2009, at the Northland Hockey Assn, Park Ave, Kensington, Whangarei. It will start at 9.15am and finish around 11.30 – 12noon.

Issues covered will be care of your hands, surgical options, rehabilitation after surgery, exercises etc. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions.
