Chinas guide to insensitivity
Published May 31st 2008, Posted in National / 2 CommentsAbout 4,000 Disabled people will be competing in 20 sports at the Paralympics games in China from the 7th to the 17th of September.
After reading a recent article in the NZ Herald on Tuesday 27th May titled ‘China’s guide wins gold for insensitivity’; it is evident that disabled people will not only be completing for medals in their chosen sport but also for the right to be treated as equals.

Autism New Zealand Parent Meeting
Published May 30th 2008, Posted in NorthlandAutism NZ is holding a meeting to find out what parents of children with autism are wanting here in Whangarei, and to discuss the further development of a support group and other services.
The meeting is at the Flames Hotel, Onerahi at 7pm on 11 June.

Empowered to vote

Motherhood and women experiencing disability

A stigma still exists towards them becoming mothers with these women sometimes being regarded as asexual and not capable of being mothers. Such attitudes may influence the quality and appropriateness of care and support provided by health professionals.
To date little research has been carried out, and none in New Zealand, to indicate or respond to the facilitators and barriers to pregnancy, birth and motherhood for women with impairments.

Equipment and Modification Services (EMS) is the system by which people of all ages, with a long term impairment, get equipment or modifications to their home or vehicle to enable them to be safe and independent in every day living activities. Equipment may include shower chairs, wheelchairs, walking frames, mobility canes, communication devices and hearing aids. The equipment is on loan to the person for as long as it continues to meet their needs.

Intellectual Disability Sector on Verge of Crisis

The National Residential Intellectual Disability Providers Group (NRID) is a national organisation comprising intellectual disability providers who support approximately 6,500 New Zealanders with an intellectual disability.

Paihia Fun run/walk

This year it will include an ‘ability component’ in which those with mobility challenges are welcome and encouraged to participate. This fun run/walk is one of the Sport Northland series of five taking place within Northland.
