Maz’s Story living with arthritis
Published April 21st 2011, Posted in NationalMy parents started noticing that things weren’t quite right with me from as young as six months old. I was taken to the doctor but they couldn’t find anything wrong. At around a year old, I started “walking” (in a manner of speaking – on my knees), refusing to straighten my legs out to a normal position.
My legs ended up frozen in the bent position – they could not be straightened and I was in immense pain if anyone tried to touch them. A visiting pediatrician specialist from the US took me into surgery in Auckland Hospital and opened one of my legs up to have a look. Finally my parents got the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis when I was 18 months old.

Published April 19th 2011, Posted in NorthlandFor the first time ever, the New Zealand Deaf community were fully included in Waitangi Day celebrations at Waitangi. Alana Best, our Whangarei Community Relations Officer went along to witness this great occasion…
It was still dark, but warm when everyone gathered for the 5am dawn Karakia in front of Te Whare Runanga, for the start of the 171st Waitangi Day Festival. I was excited as it was the first time I would have trilingual interpreters standing in front and translating both languages into New Zealand Sign Language therefore not missing any part of speeches. I could tell when it was Te Reo (Maori) or English because the trilingual interpreters used Maori signs for Te Reo.

Help improve Air NZ’s customer service
Published April 11th 2011, Posted in NationalWellington Airport’s Customer Services Manager is seeking feedback from disabled people on the customer service they experience and how it can be improved.
This is particularly relevent when you see the recent story on TVNZ’s Close Up programme last night where two very mobile ‘Attitude TV’ presenters were made to wait half an hour before boarding a Jet Star flight because they didn’t have carers with them.
Your feedback and experiences are important if we are to see improvement to travel & tourism services.

Lorens Latest
Published April 11th 2011, Posted in NorthlandHeya Everyone!
Again I have been slack! I have moved back to Hamilton for another year and have already moved once! I am now in a flat EXTREEEMELY close to University, I have my own bathroom, a larger bedroom, a very nice dog and did I mention my own bathroom? I feel as though I pretty much live alone (when I am even in Hamilton) but it is a lot better then what I thought it was going to be. I find that being around people all day at Uni, it is a great chance to study without the distractions!
