Copthorne Mobilises New Offerings

Guests at the Copthorne will have access to greater mobility around Waitangi and Paihia, thanks to a new partnership between Dove’s Tail and the Copthorne Hotel and Resort Bay of Islands, with financial support from Top Energy.
There is a new mobility scooter available for hire at the Waitangi Copthorne, which will provide a far greater holiday experience for tourists visiting the Bay of Islands with a mobility impairment.

New Parent to Parent Northland Support Group

If you would like to meet other parents or carers who are doing the same come along to ‘The Pulse’ (next to NorthTech) on Raumanga Valley Road at 9.30 a.m. on Wednesday 7th September for a coffee and a chat.

Bay of Islands Riding for the Disabled
Published August 18th 2011, Posted in NorthlandAt Bay of Islands RDA we have a highly skilled team that provides equine related therapy for people of all ages who may experience behavioural issues, social problems, have a physical or sensory disability or traumatic brain injury.
Riders attend RDA to achieve a specific goal, whether it is therapeutic, educational or sporting. Attending RDA impacts positively on a number of areas for participants including improving balance and co–ordination, posture and muscle tone, concentration, self-discipline and self-esteem, perception and spatial awareness, communication and social skills, independence and encourages decision making.

Special Olympics Whangarei is affiliated to Special Olympics New Zealand and in turn to the international body and caters for the sporting needs of people with an intellectual disability.
Come and try your hand at Soccer on Monday 15th August from 4.00pm – 5.00pm at Kensington Park (Behind the Stadium). Your coach will be Joy Hemmins.

NZSL in new TV show for youngsters
Published August 12th 2011, Posted in NorthlandAn exciting new children’s television programme, which includes New Zealand sign language, started on TV2 on Monday August 1.
The programme is about a group of crazy cartoon characters travelling around New Zealand on a bus with two ‘live’ young people, Ngatarawahi Fairhall and Victoria Craig.
Ngatarawahi and Victoria are full of energy and just as much fun as their cartoon friends. They’re always on the lookout for something new and interesting as they travel to their next New Zealand town on the bus, and are full of great ideas of things to do and see on the way.

Dr Deborah Young will be speaking at the next Parkinson’s Northland support meeting being held at the Northland Hockey Headquarters at Kensington Park at 11.00am on the 2nd September
This meeting is for Parkinson’s Northland members but other interested people are invited to attend. You may ask questions at the completion of the meeting after our lunch. MS Awareness Week

NZSL classes now in Kaikohe

This course is great for personal development with the eight week course covering finger spelling, introducing yourself, exchanging personal information, talking about surroundings, telling where you live, talking about family and telling about activities.

Chronically Fabulous

In January this year I was awarded a scholarship to attend an Outward Bound course. I was part of a group that came together from all over New Zealand, some of whom had a chronic illness as I do. While waiting to fly to Nelson, I met Amanda, who also comes from Whangarei and who amazingly was going to be on the same Outward Bound course as me.
I enjoyed parts of the course, others I didn’t, as I struggled to do some of the activities due to my chronic conditions of Lupus and Epilepsy. Since returning from Outward Bound Amanda and I have become good friends.

Minnie’s presentation on Be Accessibe was truly inspiring. disappointing to see those most in need of ‘enlightenment’ were absent….a great build up for the RWC and way beyond so up to those who did attend to be vocal! and spread the Be word!
