Whangarei Suicide Prevention Network

You are invited to join community members, health and social service workers and local business for our monthly suicide prevention hui.
The Network meets to connect with one another, and share knowledge to increase our awareness about suicide prevention and promote wellness in
our community.
Our next Whangarei Suicide Prevention Network features Tracey Hodgkinson, the national trainer of Beating the Blues. Beating the Blues is a online Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) tool for the treatment of Depression. This tool is now available to the public through GP’s in the Manaia Health PHO region. Understanding Epilepsy Seminar

Epilepsy Northland are holding an ‘Understanding Epilepsy Seminar’ on Wednesday 14 December at 11am -1pm at Suite 5 Bank St, Whangarei.
Topics that will be covered include; what is epilepsy and it’s causes, recognition of seizure types, first aid for seizures, seizure triggers, recording seizures, principles of anti-epileptic medication, life style issues, etc…

NorthAble Annual Dance

NorthAble Disability Services are holding their annual dance to celebrate the International Day of the Disabled Person on the 3rd December at the Marist Sports Club, 39 Park Avenue Whangarei from 6pm to 11pm.
The theme is ‘Silver and Gold’ and the cost is $5 per head. A light supper will be provided along with the sale of non-alcoholic beverages. We will also have spot prizes.

Far North disability community get politically engaged

Over forty members of the Far North disabled community attended the ‘Political Engagement = Disability Empowerment’ Hui in Kaitaia yesterday.
Attendees took full advantage of the opportunity to meet the new Disability Human Rights Commissioner Paul Gibson and local standing candidates Sue Bradford and Ngawai Herewini from the Mana Party and Pauline Evans from the Greens. A late apology was received from the Lynette Stewart from the Labour Party.
The Human Rights Commission and candidates gained a good insight into issues that people with disabilities are facing in the Far North and attendees had the chance to engage with the candidates around their disability policies and how these would affect them.
Thank you to all who attended and helped make this such a successful and empowering hui.

The SibShop is for children aged between 8-18 years who do not have a health condition, disability or special needs, BUT have a brother or sister that does.

Launch of ‘Plan for the Future’ DVD

We were pleased to attend the first launch in the country of the New Zealand Down Syndrome Associations new DVD resource ‘Plan for the Future’. This DVD is aimed at helping young people with Down Syndrome transition from school through to adult life.
There was great support from the disability community in Whangarei for Thomas Sadgove and his family who tell their story on the DVD about Thomas transitioning from school with support from a number of individuals and organisations. His is one story among many that show how successful and included people with Down Syndrome can be with the right supports and attitude from employers.

End of year Beach BBQ
Published November 10th 2011, Posted in NorthlandThe Brain Injury Association Northland are holding a ‘End of Year Beach BBQ’ for people living with the effects of brain injury and their families/whanau/carers and friends.
An opportunity to connect with others living with the effects of a brain injury. Bring along something to share for lunch, sunscreen, hat and togs.
Where? the beach, Ahipara Foreshore, take the main road from Kaitaia past the college, travel about 16kms and go past the Ahipara school until you find the toilets.

Candidates and Human Rights Disability Commissioner in Kaitaia

Attendance to our recent ‘Political Engagement = Disability Empowerment’ hui in Whangarei highlighted the interest from the disabled community to standing candidates policies around disability and their responses to some local disability issues.
The Far North disability community will have a chance to hear from candidates at the Baptist Church on Thursday 17 November. We look forward to meeting and hearing from Lynette Stewart (Labour Party), Sue Bradford and Ngawai Herewini (Mana Party) and Pauline Evans (Green Party).
Speaking first though will be the new Human Rights Disability Commissioner Paul Gibson. Paul will be speaking about the role of the Commission and is looking forward to meeting the disabled community to hear about the issues that are a barrier to them participating in their community.

Local Standing Candidates grilled by disability community

At yesterday’s Political Engagement = Disability Empowerment Hui, six of the local standing candidates for this years general election talked to over 100 members of the Whangarei disability community about their parties disability policies and answered questions from the floor about local disability issues. A very successful event with some lively discussions.
Attendees were also able to meet the new Human Rights Disability Commissioner Paul Gibson who spoke about the Commissions work and attendees had the opportunity to share with him issues they face in their community.
