Motor Neurone Disease Association
The Motor Neurone Disease Association is an incorporated society and registered charity. It was formed over 20 years ago to offer support and information to people diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease and their carers, families/whanau & health professionals.
Our service is offered through a qualified and trained Fieldworker. Most support is provided by phone /email but visits can also be arranged.
Our Fieldworker in the Northland area can assist you by :
- listening to you, carer/whanau and trying to understand your needs and concerns.
- providing information about MND when you have been newly diagnosed, and as your condition progresses.
- helping you to understand the information and to apply it to your individual situation.
- helping you to understand the health system, identify and access services you may need now and in the future.
- providing information and support to health professionals involved in your care, who may have limited experience of MND.
- promoting communication and co-operation between the individuals and agencies involved in your care.
- offering you the opportunity to meet or be in contact with others affected by MND.
A support group meets occasionally in Whangarei and the Northland Fieldworker attends some of these meetings – please contact the fieldworker for more information.
Quarterly newsletters are published regularly.

Lin Field
Fieldworker North and National Support Officer
I am a UK trained Speech – Language Therapist and have lived in New Zealand for over 25yrs; both my children were born here and are proud Kiwis. We somehow ended up settling in Auckland…..why you may well ask!
I have 35yrs experience working with communication difficulties in children and adults across a wide variety of disorders including progressive diseases such as Motor Neurone Disease.
I started in my position with the Motor Neurone Disease in October this year (2009) and am delighted to find myself in a role that draws on so much of my past experience and skills. I look forward to doing the best I can to support and represent both the individuals living with MND and their family/carers and the health professionals supporting them.
I want to acknowledge the great work done by Liz Gow, the previous MND Fieldworker for the Northland area, who earned such respect for the role and the association.
My role is both a national one as Support Officer to the six other Fieldworkers employed across the country; and also local as the MND Fieldworker supporting people with the disease who live anywhere north of the Harbour Bridge and up to Cape Reinga.
I am based at the National Office in Auckland and will travel north every three months but I am very available by phone, txt and email; so please contact me.
If you have any queries related to Motor Neurone Disease: if you are a health professional supporting a client; if you have MND or are a carer and wonder about coming along to the support group; if you would like to take out a membership ($30 a year) and receive our newsletters; if you have skills, energy or even funds you might like to contribute to help us support people living with this very challenging disease – then please contact me.
