In Northland, we offer the following services:

  • Educational services for professionals who work with people with epilepsy such as ambulance service staff, police, nurses and teachers. This can be in the form of presentations, small seminars or by simply providing literature.
  • Community awareness through speaking engagements in community groups including service clubs, workplaces, school and recreational clubs.
  • A national epilepsy helpline 0800 20 21 22 which comes directly through to the Whangarei office if you phone from a Northland number.
  • Information and support services, both face-to-face and over the phone, for the individual or concerned family, whanau or friends.
  • Personal educational programmes for people with epilepsy and their family and friends to increase their understanding of epilepsy, medications and services available. This may include seizure management planning that provides strategies to help the person with epilepsy gain control of their seizures and build confidence.
  • Social groups – We offer various types of support and social groups.
  • Further information can be obtained through regular publications such as brochures, information sheets, magazines and our website www.epilepsy.org.nz

Field Officer

I joined the team at Epilepsy New Zealand in July 2011 as a Field Officer covering the Northland District Health Board area, based in Whangarei.

My role is to provide support to people who have epilepsy and their families and whanau, to raise public awareness and provide education in the community about epilepsy.  Increased knowledge about epilepsy in the community helps to reduce the stigma many have about people with epilepsy and encourages everyone to see the person and not the epilepsy, especially in employment.

I come from a varied background working largely in the education sector and in client focussed roles.  I also have experience as an Electroencephalograph (EEG) Technician where I worked closely with Neurologists who specialise in this condition.

I look forward to working with people with epilepsy and getting to know them. I am available for appointments in Whangarei and outlying areas throughout Northland when visiting to meet individuals and families, presenting seminars at schools or community groups and working alongside health professionals.
